How would you react if a loved one under your care quietly wandered from sight?
A few years ago, an incident occurred with my mother, an Alzheimer's patient, that demanded I seek out assistance for her while under my care. To my amazement, of the programs in place, none dealt with the quick recovery of a senior adult who quietly wanders from sight and possibly exits a home, mall, store or strays from an outing.
In relating the incident to my family and friends, I found myself dealing with my own panic and emotional stress rather than locating my mother. Those delays, attempting to find her, the guilt, locating security, answering questions, trying to produce an up-to-date photograph, yielded even more frustration and time which could have been avoided.
Determined to find a solution, I interviewed law enforcement officers and caregiver's only to discover similar incidents occur constantly, not only exclusive to people with Alzheimer's, but the elderly with dementia, children, persons with disabilities, and persons involved in natural or man made disasters. Many of these cases, which become formal incidents, could be quickly resolved should the police or emergency responders be given the proper identification materials for a quick recovery, current photograph, physical description, and pertinent information.
